Wargame Interactive Scenario Digital Overlay Model (WISDOM) in Rome - Cecchignola

Rome – 5 November 2021- The NATO Modelling and Simulation Centre of Excellence (M&S COE) has successfully delivered its decision making and Wargaming platform WISDOM, Wargame Interactive Scenario Digitally Overlay Model, in support of a distributed wargame with participants ranging from Europe to the United States.

The NATO Military Committee directed the System Analysis and Studies working group (SAS-151), an activity within NATO’s Science & Technology Organization, and Headquarter Supreme Allied Command Transformation (HQ SACT) to conduct concept development and experimentation activities on Intermediate Force Capabilities (IFC).  Due to travel restrictions put in place by many governments in response to the pandemic, the SAS-151 and HQ SACT, decided to design and execute the IFC Wargame virtually. In this context, the NATO M&S COE provided WISDOM in order to enable a common framework platform to design, develop and conduct the IFC Joint Wargame, which was executed from 1-4 November.

The IFC Joint Wargame’s aim is to evaluate whether IFCs can make a difference to mission success and have the potential to improve operational effectiveness by allowing the more judicial use of force to escalate/de-escalate the situation against hybrid threats in the grey zone, in order to enhance force protection (FP), mitigate the risk of collateral damage, and meet NATO’s stated obligations for Protection of Civilians (PoC).

Lieutenant Colonel Brad Koerner, the NATO M&S COE Deputy Director, highlighted that “WISDOM is a unique and effective solution for Wargaming. This product can be tailored, improved, reused and adjusted to support activities including Wargaming, planning and decision making from the tactical to strategic level.”
