Space Force Tries Out a ‘Unique’ Approach for Developing New Tactics

How Modelling and Simulation Can Enhance Space Force Tactics Development

The U.S. Space Force (USSF) is seeking to develop and implement new tactics for its space systems and missions, in response to the growing threats and challenges posed by adversaries such as China and Russia. One of the key tools that can help the USSF achieve this goal is modelling and simulation (M&S).

M&S is the use of computer-based models and simulations to represent real-world phenomena and scenarios, such as orbital dynamics, space weather, satellite operations, and space warfare. M&S can provide several benefits for the USSF, such as:

  • Testing and evaluating new tactics in a safe, cost-effective, and realistic environment, without risking actual assets or personnel. M&S can also enable rapid prototyping and iteration of new ideas, as well as assessing their effectiveness and feasibility.
  • Training and educating Guardians on the principles, concepts, and skills of space operations and warfare. M&S can offer immersive and interactive learning experiences that enhance retention and transfer of knowledge. M&S can also support mission rehearsal and readiness assessment for various contingencies.
  • Supporting decision making and planning at the strategic, operational, and tactical levels. M&S can provide data-driven insights and analysis that inform policy, doctrine, acquisition, and operations. M&S can also facilitate collaboration and coordination among different stakeholders, such as the USSF, other services, allies, partners, and the commercial sector.

To leverage the full potential of M&S for space tactics development, the USSF should consider the following recommendations:

  • Establish a unified M&S framework that defines the standards, architectures, processes, and governance for M&S activities across the USSF. This framework should ensure interoperability, compatibility, security, and quality of M&S products and services.
  • Invest in M&S infrastructure and capabilities that enable robust, scalable, and agile M&S solutions for various space domains and missions. This includes developing high-fidelity models and simulations, acquiring relevant data sources, enhancing computing power and storage, and employing artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques.
  • Cultivate a M&S culture and workforce that values and utilizes M&S as a vital tool for innovation and excellence in space tactics development. This includes fostering a M&S mindset among Guardians, providing adequate training and education on M&S applications and best practices, and creating incentives and recognition for M&S contributions.

M&S is a powerful enabler for any Military or Civilian organization to achieve its vision of being agile, resilient, and dominant in the respective domain. By adopting a proactive and comprehensive approach to M&S development and integration, the user can enhance its ability to create effective and adaptive solutions that ensure security and prosperity to achieve their goals.
