NATO Modelling and Simulation working group on "M&S as a Service" in Italy
Rome – this week the M&S COE hosted the NATO Modelling and Simulation Group’s (NMSG) working group on “M&S as a Service” (MSaaS) using a hybrid format with both in person and virtual attendees. More than 30 experts from 14 nations and NATO bodies came together to evolve the “Allied Framework for MSaaS” concept. The ultimate objective of this new three year research task group is to start a possible implementation of the MSaaS vision where “M&S products, data and processes are conveniently accessible and available on-demand to all users in order to enhance operational effectiveness.”
“Modelling and Simulation as a Service (MSaaS) is an innovative technological solution that implements a cloud architecture that allows to optimize, rationalize and simplify the use of simulation systems expanding the area of employment and increasing the capabilities of M&S in favor of Users.”
The use of MSaaS solutions is in line with the industrial plans of major international industrial players in the sector, with regards, in particular, to the new “smart business” approach on the market.
Lieutenant Colonel Brad Koerner, the NATO M&S COE Deputy Director, offered that “The main advantages of the MSaaS architecture are in the medium and long term compared to an immediate initial investment in the infrastructure, which allows over time to: reduce subsequent hardware, software, and maintenance costs; simplify operational management in the medium and long term; and to increase the efficiency, optimization and rationalization of resources”.
