Just finished the CWIX 2022 NATO exercise at the NATO Modelling & Simulation Centre of Excellence
24/06/2022 – The Coalition Warrior Interoperability eXploration, eXperimentation, eXamination eXercise (CWIX) is an annual NATO Military Committee approved event, held live at the NATO Joint Force Training Centre (JFTC) in Bydgoszcz, Poland and virtually in several distributed locations across Europe and North America. CWIX is designed to bring continuous improvement in interoperability for the Alliance and this year hosted 34 NATO nations, 10 observer countries, several NATO/EU Entities and industries testing 18 focus areas Articles :: JFTC – NATO.
Allied Command Transformation (ACT) provides directions and guidance for the exercise, while Partner Nations sponsor capabilities with specific objectives. The CWIX programme focuses primarily on testing and improving the interoperability of NATO and National C4I systems, with particular emphasis on the ones deployed within the NATO Response Force (NRF) and Combined Joint Task Force (CJTF).
NATO Modelling & Simulation Centre of Excellence (NATO M&S COE) took part in CWIX22 bringing its Modelling and Simulation as a Service (MSaaS) capability and providing support to the participants involved in the M&S Focus Area to examine, explore and experiment the interoperability of their tools in the Federated Mission Network (FMN) environment.
The M&S COE MSaaS capability is based on the Open Cloud Environment ApplicatioN (OCEAN), developed by LEONARDO Spa. OCEAN is a LEONARDO solution made available to M&S COE within a long-term strong collaboration to implement the NATO MSaaS approach. It offers a unique access point to services through a web portal where users can discover, compose, and execute sessions to facilitate the delivery, versioning, testing, consumption, termination and disposal of M&S services.
OCEAN extends the traditional virtual environments for experimentation, test and training activities to a dynamic (cloud-based) environment able to create virtual machines, containers, and virtual networks, in isolated or joined concurred sessions.
The M&S CoE CWIX team provided its MSaaS tool for the whole CWIX M&S Focus Area and the International partners so to exploit this innovative capability and all its properties. OCEAN acted in CWIX22 as Cloud Simulation Node allowing data distribution & info sharing for all the stakeholders and federating participants’ M&S tools by running two specific software (PITCH RTI and C2SIM) installed on two separate Virtual Machines.
OCEAN provided on cloud three different M&S tools: MASA SWORD, WISDOM (Warfare Interactive Scenario Digital Overlay Model) and COSES (Cyber Operational Synthetic Effects Service) while sharing and testing the following partner’s services in a federated environment: C2 System (NLD), Kubernetes Cloud Infrastructure (NLD), CGF simulation & Hyssos Sketch Thru Plan C2 (USA), SitaWare HQ (DEU), MASA SWORD (FRA) and C2LG GUI (DEU).
The Director of the NATO MSCOE, Col. Stefano LO STORTO stated: “The CWIX is our main yearly exercise. Considering the remarkable interest found last year for the Ocean MSaaS, the NATO M&S COE continued in the experimentation of the system by supporting sustainable training & exercise with technological and cutting edge tools. Our mission is being connected, networked and ready to operate together from day zero”.
