Great success for the 9th edition of the NATO Modelling and Simulation Basic Course

Rome – from 10 to 13 November 2020 the NATO Modelling & Simulation Centre Of Excellence (NATO M&S COE) conducted the 9th edition of the NATO M&S Basic Course from the facilities of “Adriano De Cicco” barracks – Rome – Cecchignola.

The purpose of this course is to deliver basic knowledge about the M&S use in the military context.

Due to the worldwide Covid-19 situation, this edition of the course was conducted for the first time in e-learning and live virtual lessons, with teachers speaking from different countries.

The online  edition of the 9th NATO M&S Basic Course was successfully attended by 85 students from 21 different countries spread from Australia to the United States of America with an attendance three times higher than the one registered during the residential editions.

This course is just one among the many others dedicated to about 200 participants yearly. The flexibility of the on-line course permitted to significantly increase the number of non-military participants, in fact almost the 70% of the attendees of this session of the NATO M&S Basic Course were civilians (from academy and other organizations). For the same reason also the average age of the participants was decreased; half of the students were 30 years old or younger including also 20 students from the STRATEGOS Master organized by the Genoa University.

Colonel Michele TURI, the NATO M&S COE Director, during his introductory message stated: “This is not the first time that the Modelling and Simulation Center of Excellence organized such an event in a virtual and digital environment; Education and Training have a paramount role in promoting NATO competitiveness. The new challenge is related to the re-organization of all our consolidated activities in a new digital way”.
