17th meeting of the Steering Committee in occasion of the 10th anniversary of the NATO M&S CoE
Rome – From 15-16 December 2021, the NATO M&S COE convened the 17th Steering Committee meeting within the “Adriano De Cicco” barracks in Cecchignola, Rome. The meeting was conducted with national representatives attending in presence and virtually. The meeting brought together the national representatives from all of the NATO M&S COE’s Sponsoring Nations including Italy, the Czech Republic, the United States, and Germany.
During the meeting, the Steering Committee discussed the achievements by the Centre in 2021, to include the successful execution of the NATO CA2X2 Forum and MESAS Conference, two of the COE’s diamond events. Additionally, the Steering Committee were presented with, and approved, the new and continuing projects for 2022.
The M&S COE’s program of work for 2022 will allow the continued work on topics relevant to NATO, Nations, and its Partners. The Centre will continue exploring topics related to modelling & simulation and its application to the Alliance.
Concurrently with the Steering Committee meeting, the NATO M&S COE celebrated 10 years as an NATO Accredited Centre of Excellence. The anniversary was highlighted by an exclusive performance from the world famous Italian Army Band, directed by Major Filippo Cangiamila, to the Centre, the national representatives, and the former M&S COE Directors.
The M&S COE’s Deputy Director, LTC Brad KOERNER said that, “The COE is now poised to increase our contribution to NATO for 2022 and continue our pursuit of excellence in the field of modelling & simulation. We look forward to increasing our collaboration with the military, academia and industry to advance the goals of the Alliance.”

The NATO M&S COE is dedicated to the promotion of M&S in support of operational requirements, training and interoperability. The Centre act as a catalyst for transformation through the involvement of NATO, governments, academia, industry, operational and training entities, by improving the networking of NATO and nationally owned M&S systems, the cooperation between Nations and organizations through the sharing of M&S information and developments and serving as an international source of expertise for transformation in the related domain.
ITALIAN ARMY BAND
Founded in 1964, the Army Band is made up of performers graduated from the Conservatory and recruited through a national competition.
It is active both for institutional services and in an intense concert activity, which has seen it present in countless Italian and foreign locations, where it has operated in France, Holland, Malta, Belgium, Luxembourg, Yugoslavia, Austria, Egypt, Germany and the USA.
In recent years she has been, among other things, a guest of the Verdian National Celebrations, of the “Musical Festivals” of Bologna, of the International Festival of Military Bands of Modena and has participated, with other artists including Placido Domingo, in the Gala Concert for the 90 years of Giancarlo Menotti (Spoleto, 2001); took part in the “Festival dei due mondi” in Spoleto in the 1998, 1999, 2001, 2005 editions and held the inaugural concert of the 2002 edition; and in 2005, at the invitation of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia, he took part, at the Parco della Musica in Rome, in the opening night of the “K Festival”, a triennial festival dedicated to Mozart; in 2006 it was included in the September Music program in Turin and in the symphonic season of the GOG in Genoa.
He has collaborated with internationally renowned soloists such as Jacques Mauger and Steven Mead and is the first and still the only Italian military complex to have had “guest directors” on the podium, including Daniele Carnevali, Thomas Fraschillo and David Gregory. His repertoire ranges from celebratory to symphonic lyric, with a particular predilection for original music for bands, both in depth in historical pages and in pieces of the most current relevance. His performance of the Italian National Anthem, recorded in the version closest to Novaro’s autograph score, was chosen and included, among the symbols of the Republic, on the Quirinale website.
He has to his credit the presence in numerous radio-television broadcasts and an intense record production, recently expanded with CDs containing the live recordings of the 2001 and 2003 concerts at the “International Military Band Festival” in Modena, with the “Cinecittà” CDs. , “Flumen” and “The Age of Mozart” made for Edizioni Scomegna, of the CD “Bella Italia” (Soloist Steven Mead) for Edizioni Bocchino of London, with the CD “Divagazioni musica” published by Edizioni Eufonia and, recently with a CD of music by Luigi Zaninelli recorded in a co-production with the American Universities of Southern Mississippi and Illinois.
Led in the past by the Masters Amleto Lacerenza, Marino Bartoloni, Domenico Cavallo (f.f.), Fulvio Creux, Antonella Bona (s.v.), since 2019 it is directed by Maestro Filippo Cangiamila.
